The other day myson and I drove to the city to go grocery shopping. He rearranged his schedulea little bit to accommodate this outing with no grumbles. Our schedules arenutty and so the 45-minute drive to and from the store is a nice way to chat orgoof off with loud music. He’ll be off to university this summer so the moretime spent together now, is 100% better. While in the store he excitedlymentioned that we should get phyllo pastry and spinach and…and…and maybe even. Herattled off the ingredients for spanakopita.

“I’ll make itthis weekend,” he promised.

Well, life gets in the way and when he was called intowork and later took his darling for a spur of the moment dinner date. I decidedto have a date with a kg of spinach.

The recipe was lovely and there was just one thing that myson mentioned that I forgot to do, cut the spanacopita into squares prior tocooking…

I knew that.

Told him that he should have done the same thing whenhe made the baklava…

New Years and a recipe

I had a wee itch to change willowcat studio; the look and name..
All the names that piqued my interest were already taken, except one (which I have saved).
In the end I choose to keep the old name for a new year, and what a brilliant year I expect it to be!

More creating, love, sleep and peace.
Time better spent
New adventures
Good health and fitness
Family, friends and a something wonderful.

I reckon it will be a very good year.

Turkey Dinner Melts
Makes 4 open face sandwiches
on medium heat sautée until soft (about 10 minutes):
2 small onions sliced
1 can of sliced mushrooms (it's all I had, fresh would be yummier)
3 cloves of garlic minced
season with salt and pepper

Add and cook till heated through:
1-2 cups cubed turkey
1/2 cup corn
1 cup gravy

Toast 4 slices of whole grain bread.
Spread with mayo and cranberry sauce, top with turkey mixture and grated mozzarella cheese
Pop in oven to broil for a few minutes!

Now a rest from turkey.

Lamb Burgers

Some say that turning a perfectly good piece of meat into ground meat is well just not cool...but how else are you supposed to make the most perfect burger??? Creating a recipe as I go...

Lamb burgers
500g ground lamb
500g ground beef
2 slices of whole grain bread
1/4c milk
1 large onion minced
4 garlic cloves minced
7 tbsps fresh chopped mint
3 Tbsps fresh chopped cilantro
2 Tbsps fresh thyme
Salt and pepper

In a large bowl place milk and bread together until the consistency of oatmeal. Add the rest of the ingredients together. Form into patties fry (or BBQ) until cooked.
We served ours with sautéed mushrooms, caramelised onions, tomatoes, lettuce, mayo and mountain of fries!! :)

These next few days will prove to be busy. I need to slap the final coat on the orange wall (pictured), bake cupcakes for Lala's daycare class , make a family dinners worth of perogies, work, clean, catch up on my courses, prepare for a craft sale, celebrate my 'Lala's' 4th birthday, make invites for next weeks friend party, host the dinner and all the little surprises that come with a teenager and 2 small girls. Fortunately my order from well.ca arrived the other day and I was able to eke out a little time to paint my toes, the colour is called 'blue me away'....seems fitting, don't cha think?

Last week was spent tending to my sick sprouts. This gave me some respite from my employment but certainly not from work. Fevers, rashes, wobbly tummies and the late night shift made everyone a little tired and cranky. Every now and again we sat on the couch, the little ones watch their favourites cartoons. Luckily this gave me a little rest in the form of daydreams.
Mine are pretty simple; Hugh Laurie, the acquisition of a house elf, winning the lottery, running away to foreign lands to play in rolling green mountains, satin sanded ocean beaches and mysterious ruins and making a living of my own design.

So today I did a little window shopping (a daydream), what if I could buy whatever I'd like... These would be a good start

my new love affair with music via CBC Radio 3

I like music but I have never been a passionate music lover and yet I love my favourite songs but often forget the artists and titles. Years will go by and these songs pop up some place; I always wonder why I had forgotten it. It's a quirk...I have a few, uh... several, well perhaps zillions even, but that's not the point. The point is to create another venue for me gush about CBC radio. Not only am I treated to programs like vinyl cafe, the debaters and Wire Tap but then I discovered CBC radio 3 on Friday night and frankly I am smitten, you can read about it here too at Buy Canadian First (couldn't help myself).

So I am sending Canadian love songs to you and a huge thank you to CBC.

"Live Wire" by Buttons the Intergalactic Sleep Dog. Perhaps it is a song of the circus but I find it very much a love song.

"Your Rocky Spine" by the Great Lake Swimmers". I have no words just a little shiver.

The best is I will not loose or forget the songs. They will be there neatly tucked away on my CBC member page waiting patiently for me to return. Now if only I had an add button that updated my address book.

Love this time of year.
This weekend we did a test run on the zombie make-up and then took some pictures...of course. The rest of the week is going to be spent reading, finishing assignments, creating a cow girl outfit, the rest of the Zombie costume and fine tuning the halloween party at the center.

We have never taken J to see Santa because she has never been keen on other people, especially strangers. Over time she has grown accustomed to people but is very aware of their proximity and if the approach too aggressively she reacts with her super power scream, yet if you are too meek she will become bored of you and wander away. Life revolves around her! We are trying to teach her a balance, and with patience and consistency it is working. Sadly her dislike of strangers has not waned so much so that she wouldn't get within 2 meters of Santa, so here is S with her first Santa.

My hubby and his buddy went camping this weekend. Usually they drive out to Ontario to do but this year they just used the campground near town. The kids and I decided to walk over and say hello! We also had to deliver some dog food :D
The walk was fun but sadly I think I dropped my keys somewhere along our adventure. Now I have to try and retrace my steps before the snow falls, i am not worried about my keys I do not want to loose my lip balm and lip balm holder!!

Happy All Hallows

Good morning friends.
The hallowed eve was a smashing success. J's first trip to seek out treats by screaming for them on peoples door steps! Once she got the hang of it you couldn't stop her. She would enter people's homes and start to pick her own candy. When I explained that it was her first season trick or treating, everyone giggled and handed her the bowl to pick her own treats. She was frightened several times by ghouls, skeletons and other creepy monsters that come out this night. I must admit i did have a good chuckle at her fearful reactions to a bunch of young monster who approached Julia, with good intentions, just to say hello. They took off their masks to say good bye and make her feel better but in the end she was clearly not impressed. It seems that all these startling events didn't phase her at all, she slept like a little angel.
The ghost is E, isn't he darling! heh!
Since today is the beginning of Dia de los muertos and is All Hallows lets all remember our dead.

The long day and the crafty night

We have been using our fireplace now that the temperature has dropped and wind whispers the snow is not far away. It's actually a wood burning stove with lovely glass doors and keeps us cozy and warm. Today Julia decided to touch it.
I was never too concerned as she would always steer clear of the heat, frequently reminding us how ‘hawt’ it is, except today, when curiosity lured her to touch it.

It was awful seeing the shock and pain in her eyes. If you have every burnt yourself you know the lingering prickling sting. She ran to me holding her finger in the air, big tears and cries with complaints of ‘owies’. In the end all was ok, we went from kisses to a cool cloth, then a cool water to dip (not only our injured finger but the other index as well). Finally a little Advil and some refrigerated baby wipes and eventually the finger was fine. She still held it up in the air, as if she was at all times ready to pipe up with a grand idea.

Sleigh bels jing-a-ling!
Whoot Christmas is on the way! Well I am not terribly excited for the snow, windchills and bad road conditions. I am excited for holiday baking, spending time with family and sledding with Julia. She will enjoy this season, now the master of her territory and climbing abilities.

Here is the first of the new line of willowcat holiday cards. Reindeer will be presented on a 5 X 7 card and the image will be a 4 x 6 photograph. So beautiful and simple digitally enhanced to give a beautiful and serene feeling.
This reindeer lives at the Winnipeg zoo during the 'off season', enjoys his days with other herbivores and getting pets from the visitors.

Well I got a phone call... from camp!
It rattles my nerves because they only call when something has gone awry. My poor young man, while having a hoot on the slip and slide, bent {possibly broke} his finger. My instinct was to insist they take him to the nearest ER and have that finger professionally looked at! They were more than willing, but my common sense prevailed and I opted on getting further advice from my darling husband. Someone who has not only broken several bones in his youth but is a little more level headed about these things. It seems that the camp took very good care of the boy, and with one day left we will hope that they did properly orient the finger prior to taping it to it's neighbor.
I talked with E, he is in some pain but not enough to stop the paint ball and fishing or any of the other activities left in his final 24 hours.

How darling are these little guys? I call them somethings. Shown are part of a mini card set of 6 but there are also colorful greeting cards with messages. All hand drawn in ink, each one their own little being.

Weekend fun June01

Slow weekend. Baby J had a fever and we waited for it to break. Saturday she woke early had some milk and toast then fell asleep until noon. I was happy for some extra snoozes as well, a sick, cranky sad baby is draining to care for. Plenty of time sitting together just because. She is much better today, we went for breakfast, then to the park.

Ohh the fun!
The little one was invited to her very first little kidlings birthday party! She had an amazing good time. When she walked into the party room she was greeted with balloons. She tried her best to gather them all up but they kept popping out of her hands in a further attempt to gather them all she handed some to me. She played and laughed, ate and explored, and made new little friends. When we arrived back home she cried the fun was over and promptly fell asleep♥
We had lunch with my dad and step mom for a belated birthday event as well as a long over due visit. After my darling hubby took a little detour to a riding stable. I am, and have always been, a big sucker for horses and often beg for a horse pit stop when ever one is spotted at the side of the road. Today he just surprised me.
The Horse pictured in the top left as well as the bottom left was Roscoe. He is super sweet and gave us little horse lip nibbles, he even licked the boy!! The horse pictured in the top right,Kali, was weary and shy but quickly came around to some loving. The grey horse on the bottom right had no intention of being loved, at least not by us. We approached and he came close enough to realized we did not belong there. He pranced in a circle, jumped, hopped, snorted and whinnied at us. I assume he was telling us to go.

By sheer luck I was accidentally given tulips. Julia's Nana and grandpa stopped in yesterday with dinner, some groceries and flowers. The flowers were supposed to return home with her, but destined to stay with me after they were forgotten.
I don't often keep flowers in the house, the lure of the blooms are too much for the cat not to nibble. Julia, after she sniffed the flower, she plucked all it's petals off the stem. Yes my little love, we all love you♥

I have so much trouble with time. Keeping track of if and often wondering where it went! This week I managed to use some of it wisely and created a wonderful series of blackbird flat notecards. A series of 6 cards only on robin egg blue and celery green backdrops, each one similar but unique from the other.

Wonderful happenings this weekend!
We had a delightful easter brunch on Sunday! A get together with the moms, my aunt, uncle, cousin and her family. I haven't seen then in forever and it was fabulous.

My dad and step-mom was out of town, so hopefully we can get together soon.

In other fantastic news the pastel painting above was bought this weekend from a friend locally for her sister. I later found out that the sister loved the piece! Thank you so much♥
